Boost for Ermelo recycling project

Bophelo Recycling, the brainchild of Johanna Leshabane, focuses on collecting recyclables such as plastics, cardboard, paper, cans as well as glass, from informal settlements, households, and schools in the community. Through partnership between PETCO and Safripol, Bophelo Recycling (Pty) Ltd received a major boost in June 2019 when PETCO and Safripol jointly handed over supporting infrastructure worth R500 000 to further Leshabane’s vision – this sponsorship included a secure double-carport roof shelter for the facility, a branded shipping container (to store collected recyclables), a branded 4-metre trailer (to transport the collected bales to recycle facilities), a branded baling machine (to enable collected waste to be baled, and save cost on transport), a 3-phase electricity meter, electricity cables, an extending fence, a business signage board, and 5 branded trollies. Since the joint investment, and then the PETCO-Safripol joint investment into the Bophelo Recycling project in June 2019, there has been a general upward trend in the recycling volumes collected at the facility, with more than a doubling in output volumes, as well as an increase in the number of new jobs created. Bophelo Recycling now employs up to 11 permanent employees and 20 part-time collectors, who assist with sorting and buying of recyclable material.
