Operation Clean Sweep

Safripol is a signatory of Operation Clean Sweep® (OCS). OCS is a voluntary stewardship program of the Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) and the American Chemistry Council’s Plastics Division, an international program designed to prevent resin pellet, flake and powder loss and help keep this material out of the marine environment. Plastics SA is a custodian of OCS in SA. Safripol has signed the OCS Pledge to show our leadership and commitment in keeping plastic resin out of the environment, and ensuring that it remains a resource in the materials loop. The OCS pledge aligns with the Lets Plastic Responsibly campaign recently launched by Safripol, which is about using plastics responsibly, and ensuring that plastics never ends up as waste in the environment.

Packaging SA

Packaging SA is a voluntary industry body. Its members are in two broad categories, Converters and Associates. The Converters represent 70% of the revenue generated by the industry. Associates are in effect the major raw material suppliers, material organizations, brand owners, retailers and other organizations and associations with interests in the packaging industry. Collectively this body directly employs some 60 000 people in South Africa.

PETCO

As a member of and financial contributor to PETCO, Safripol actively supports recycling and alternative PET usage initiatives, with a goal of 0% waste to landfill and certified waste disposal. The plant also recently introduced fast-reheat resin and ‘BIO PET’, manufactured using renewable sugarcane resources. An industry-driven and industry-financed environment solution for post-consumer PET plastic, PETCO is the trading name of the PET Recycling Company NPC.

This company is incorporated to represent the South African PET plastic industry’s joint effort to self-regulate post-consumer polyethene terephthalate (PET) recycling.

Safripol contributes to PETCO through voluntary grants, which ensures support for PET recycling efforts by sustaining collection interest and reducing the volume of post-consumer PET in the waste stream.

It plays an active role in the growth and development of the South African plastics industry and prides itself on providing industry training and driving the industry’s environmental initiatives.

POLYCO

The Polyolefin Recycling Company, trading as POLYCO, is a not-for-profit industry body formed by the polyolefin converters themselves to promote the collection and recycling of post-consumer polyolefin packaging containers. POLYCO aims to minimise the environmental impact of post-consumer polyolefins on the South African landscape.

SA Plastics Pact

The SA Plastics Pact is a collaborative voluntary initiative working with the value-chain to create a circular economy for plastics packaging in South Africa. In line with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy vision, the SA Plastics Pact’s targets for 2025 include: i) Eliminate unnecessary and problematic packaging, ii) 100% of plastic packaging to be reusable, recyclable or compostable, iii) 70% of plastic packaging effectively recycled, and iv) 30% average recycled content across all plastic packaging. Safripol is a member of the SA Plastics Pact to demonstrate our leadership and commitment in advancing the circular economy for plastics in South Africa.
